The CRR Project
“Being Seen as Green” A collaboration between SEI and Circle Urban Ministries
Computer Refurbishing & Recycling Project Information
Students participated in specialized training that coached them on the refurbishing and recycling aspects of Computer Engineering.
The specific goals of the program were to provide students with an opportunity to learn about the exciting aspects of computer engineering, and business and project coordination skills. Students also obtain educational enrichment skills in the areas of Language, Science and Math.
Students gained technology skills in a hands-on service learning environment through an A+ Certification / Digital Literacy inspired curriculum. Service learning performance tasks associated with this project included:
- Computer Engineering
- Identify parts of the computer; Configure hardware; Load software; Troubleshoot technical issues
- Business Skills / Project Coordination Skills
- Inventory documentation and management; Manufacturing Process Management; Relationship Management; Problem solving skills; Working with teams
- Educational Enrichment
- Language: Procedural writing; Public Speaking; Note taking skills
- Science: Electricity; Power; Recycling Material breakdown
- Math: Basic algebra for problem solving; Data collection and spreadsheet skills
- Recycling aspects
- Computers are a primary contributor to electronic waste (e-waste), posing a major disposal issue because they are made up of various components that are toxic to the environment. In this project students learn the correct way to dispose/recycle a computer.
Students that participated in the CRR Project earned service learning hours for their high school requirements.
* Thanks to Circle Urban Ministries, refurbished computers were also awarded to students that needed a computer at home; four of six students received computers.
